Abstract
Recently, lonely death has been rapidly increasing in Korea. In this study, we attempted to explore the multidimensional characteristics of lonely deaths by life cycle through the cases of lonely death in newspaper articles that reflect social interest. Therefore, we classified, coded and analyzed cases reported in domestic media and newspapers for 10 years from January 1, 2012 to May 31, 2022 according to the multidimensional characteristics of the lonely death phenomenon. The results of a study conducted with a total of 170 cases of lonely death reported in 19 domestic daily newspapers for 10 years and 5 months are as follows: First, the number of reports of elderly and middle-aged people, who were previously considered vulnerable to lonely death, remained constant, and after COVID-19, the number of reports of lonely death cases in young people and families increased rapidly, indicating that the problem of lonely death has expanded to a lifelong perspective and family unit and social interest has increased. Second, the localization of lonely death could be considered through reports of many cases of lonely death in places where residents of vulnerable residential spaces and specific housing types were concentrated. Third, the characteristics of lonely death in young people showed that social network function, physical and mental health were highly vulnerable, leading to the high risk of lonely death. Fourth, the importance of community integrated care and case management services was confirmed through the fact that many of the middle-aged and elderly were incorporated into the welfare system as basic livelihood recipients, but they actually died alone. Lastly, by examining in an exploratory way that the majority of cases of lonely death in individual and family units are a phenomenon very closely related to caring, we discussed the direction and countermeasures for future lonely death prevention policies based on these results.
